U.S. Senator from New Jersey

Robert Menendez was born in January 1954 in New York City. His parents were Cuban immigrants. He earned an undergraduate degree in political science from Saint Peter’s College in New Jersey and received his Juris Doctor from Newark’s Rutgers School of Law. He engaged in the private practice of law.

He entered politics serving on the Union City Board of Education and was later elected mayor of Union City, serving six years. He went on to be a representative in New Jersey’s General Assembly, and then in the New Jersey Senate. In 1992, he was elected to the United States House of Representatives, occupying a seat there until he was appointed by Governor John Corzine to fill a vacancy in the U.S. Senate in 2006, where he remains.

He is divorced from Jane Jacobsen with whom he has two children. He is presently engaged to Nadine Arslanian. Menendez is Roman Catholic.

Minority members of the Senate announced their own program to counter the global influence of China. They unveiled a $350 million package of legislation that would boost U.S. competitiveness and recast diplomacy with Beijing.

The Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Jim Risch, said he hoped the ideas could be combined with proposals of the majority party for a bipartisan plan, calling it an American issue, not a partisan issue.

Senator Bob Menendez, the committee’s ranking member, said he looked forward to working with the majority to “forge a strong, unified and bipartisan approach” on the matter.
